The Alkaline Diet Recipes book is a 20 page book with a handful of recipes that the author recommends for maintaining your proper pH balance in your diet.
The main book for The Alkaline Diet is 112 pages, making it a relatively hefty read as far as weight loss books go. Most of the books that I’ve reviewed in the weight loss niche are about half that length.
The Alkaline Diet is divided into the following chapters:
- Things We Put in Our Mouth – Food
- Understanding Acid Alkaline Balance
- Causes of Acid Alkaline Balance
- What is your pH Level
- The Right Food Combination Will Take Care of Your Stomach
- Oxygen & Exercises
- The Underlying Problem – Are You Going to Take Action?
The premise of The Alkaline Diet is that our bodies are often too acidic, as defined by the pH scale. This scale rates things as either basic (alkaline) or acidic on a scale that ranges from 0 to 14. You can test using special litmus paper strips, and anything tested that comes up at less than 7 on that scale is acidic and anything between 7 and 14 is alkaline, or basic.
Fortunately, adopting such a diet is not overly difficult to do, and it turns out that (surprise!) many foods that are good for you are naturally alkaline in nature, such as fruits and vegetables. Not all, of course, but many are. Other foods that we commonly eat, such as meat and dairy, are more acidic and are to be eaten in smaller quantities.
The Alkaline Diet also provides special rules for eating certain types of foods in combination, as the author says that this can be detrimental. In the cases of these specific types of foods, The Alkaline Diet recommends that you wait for a short period of time after eating one food and before eating the other one.
The list of “good” foods and “bad” foods is spelled out explicitly, both in the book and in the accompanying shopping list. The author gives examples of typical meals that are bad, being mostly acidic and then offers suggestions for altering those meals to allow them to conform more closely to the alkaline ideal.
There isn’t a proper meal plan outlined in The Alkaline Diet, just a series of general guidelines. You’re free to eat what you like, subject to the list of what is and isn’t permitted. The list of foods that are good and bad are fairly common ones to find in any diet, so you’ll be cutting back on dairy and sugar while loading up on fruits and vegetables, eating them on the schedule provided in the book.
There’s cursory mention of exercise in the book, though it is recommended. I’m not really sure how The Alkaline Diet is going to give you a flat tummy without a lot of exercise, but the author merely recommends that you find a good aerobic exercise program and stick to it.
The Alkaline Diet is reasonably well written, and much of the diet advice seems to be nutritionally sound. If you follow the advice in the book explicitly, you may well see some good results when it comes to weight loss. I doubt you’ll have a flat tummy without a lot of exercise, however. I cannot speak for whether The Alkaline Diet will allow you to have a boosted metabolism or immune system.
